My current campaign is bugged and can't create saves. Unfortunately, not even that works for me anymore. I've launched missions with guaranteed predicted success, only to watch as my squadrons get wiped out for no reason. Planes bugged out and loitered endlessly on the flight deck. Still, I found the core gameplay of planning, launching, and recovering missions to be fun enough to recommend this game if it weren't for one last thing: some terrible game-breaking bugs. And on top of all this there is no catch-up mechanic. To make matters worse, some upgrades are mutually exclusive, so you can't go back and get something you missed. #AIRCRAFT CARRIER SURVIVAL REVIEW UPGRADE#Some upgrades are useless, and you might end up mistakenly investing scarce upgrade points in them early on because you didn't know better. There are too many ways to screw yourself into a dead-end campaign. The campaign's progression system is bad. At least air and fleet aspects don't detract from the overall experience, which is more than I can say for this next part: the progression system. I got a thematically underwhelming +1 DEF to fighter squadrons. When I first upgraded my fighters, I expected to get some sort of bonus to CAP or air superiority, because that's what fighters do, right? Well, no. A great example of this are the aircraft upgrade paths. You do have control over the carrier's functions and her crew, as well as other ships in your task force, but there's not a whole lot of depth to these elements. For better or worse, the flight deck is the focus. The game isn't about the air wing or the carrier, despite the title. ![]() Now, if you're looking for fleet strategy or air combat, you're not going to find it here. Do you eat the hit, or do you order your pilots to ditch? This is the best part of the game. An enemy airstrike just appeared on the horizon and you don't have time to both put CAP in the air and recover the last airstrike you sent out because they have already been loitering for 3 hours. #AIRCRAFT CARRIER SURVIVAL REVIEW HOW TO#And then figuring out how to salvage the situation when the game throws a wrench in your plans. ![]() Assembling the best strike aircraft composition for a particular target. Things like optimizing timetables for launches and recoveries. The core of the game is organizing flight operations. If you're a carrier geek like myself and are still interested, wait until the worst bugs are patched out. I enjoyed most of my time despite the rough edges, but ultimately, what did it in for me was just one too many game-breaking bugs. It captures the feel of managing carrier operations well, but it's more of a worker placement/management game than a naval combat or strategy game.
